Tabenings - Spooky Edition

Gar, it's late on Tuesday and I almost forgot to post!

Been working on M&A, hit a bit of a stopper but I'll try to plow through it. Um.... what else. Hrm.

As I may have mentioned, I picked up World of Warcraft again, and am enjoying it relatively well. I've been playing my Demon Hunter class recently, and one of the decisions you need to make early on in the class is which of two other Demon Hunters you want to make your lieutenant; the decision doesn't really affect your ability to do anything later on, but it gives flavor and determines which of a set of quests you get to do.

The two options are a 'loyal lieutenant' sort and a 'questioning / greater good' person. I suppose each have their appeal, from a persona perspective, but of course I made my choice based on totally different criteria.

If you pick one of them, Kayn, then you wind up getting the option sometime down the road to do a small set of quests involving a Demon Hunter you encountered in the prelude, Cyana Nightglaive, who has apparently been tempted to the dark side and gone over to the legion.

Rrrr. That hits the spot. I love me some corruption. Blizzard delivers on that - although obviously in a rather G-rated way - as anyone who played the Diablo games can tell you. So, since Kayn is the one who offers access to this particular set of Evil Cyana quests, Kayn is the fellow I signed up with. Loyal? Rebellious? Who the fuck cares? I want to see me some corrupted elf-girl!

(Sadly, the eventual quest has almost zilch in erotic corruption payoff, but even so it's the razor I went with to make the decision. Which probably says a lot about me.)

  1. Usually the choices given in mainstream games are milquetoast and don't give the player very much in terms of corruption story lines - which is too bad, as many of them could easily have really good ones.

I think the last fairly okay one I experienced was way back in 2011, surprisingly in 'The Old Republic,' an MMORPG.

Here's a link to a (rather long) video if you wish to experience the plot line without having to play the game. Your character is given the opportunity to corrupt an NPC to the dark side, which results in a rather fun story line and romance. It's too bad the game has to keep everything more or less PG.

Beyond that, I don't think I've experienced a good corruption story line beyond what I've seen in the TG games site or (very rarely) in hentai.

Fairy Fighting is a hentai game that comes to mind, with very suggestive scenes showing that your character can be converted into a shadow character if you lose in a certain way vs. the shadow fairy. (warning: extreme tentacles as befitting a Japanese indie game)

You can find the scenes in question on Pornhub if you don't wish to jump through the hoops of trying to get the game working.

The only other game I can think of off hand is Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (Malkavian is very fun to play), but that game was released ages ago. A pity, the idea of being able to play as a transformed dark character in a morally ambiguous universe is fun to explore (and I'm not talking run of the mill gaming like GTA).

I would rather like to hear if anyone else knows of more good corruption story lines in video games.

    1. Hadn't really thought of VtMB that way before - I suppose it works if you play Ventrue and really crank Dominate. I've never really gone that path (murdery disciplines are usually more useful, IME, and garden-variety Persuade is cheaper).

For the non-Ventrue, I guess there's Heather, although she goes from "what the hell" to calling you "Master" in a dreamy tone of voice all basically off camera, which isn't that fun, although some of her dialogue (especially around the poor bastard she seduced and locked in your bathroom) is decently suggestive, if you want to read it that way. Also, there's LaCroix's Dom'ed suicide bomber cop, which is more creepy than hot but is _impressively_ creepy.

    2. Also, to out friendly host: don't buy VtMB because of some crap about MC/corruption we've said. Buy it because it's _really fucking good_. (Also buggy as hell, so install the unofficial patch and the patch plus, which fix it up and add lots of almost-complete cut content. Also sexist as hell, so... grind your teeth and chant "videogaming's come a long way, videogaming's come a long way...")

And hey, if you want to play a Domtrue the first time, we won't tell on you... ;)

    3. Oh, come on, it's all about driving people insane and talking to stop signs! :D

    4. Well yes, and also knowing the entire plot from jump, but Malk is a definite second play-through class. It helps to know what the hell is going on to interpret their dialogue.

Unrelatedly: you've made a powerful enemy today, sign. D:<

    5. BEWARE: It and the TV are plotting against you O o O

But in all (attempts at) seriousness, for maximum corruption in VTM Bloodlines. you'd need to install the Companion Mod.

VTM Redemption has the corruption front and center at the beginning of the game though...

SWKOTOR2 has some pretty nifty corruption options, provided you've the patience to deal with the bugs/install the patch mod.

Dark Souls 3 has a lot of corruption. Corrupt yourself. Corrupt a nun! Corrupt the nice lady who's keeping the lights on!!! The Bosses have corrupted a lot. The whole world's corrupted and decaying. Just be prepared to die...a...lot...
